ICT40120 Certificate IV in Information Technology

Formal recognition for individuals job ready and competent in a wide range of ICT roles, including database, networking, programming, systems administration and web development functions.
Overview

Turn years of hands-on ICT support experience into the ICT40120 Certificate IV in Information Technology, a nationally recognised qualification for individuals who are job ready and competent in a wide range of information and communications technology (ICT) roles. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) allows your experience across database development, networking, programming, systems administration support or web development to be formally assessed against this qualification rather than starting your learning over. Once your evidence is assessed and confirmed by our partner RTO, you hold the same AQF-recognised Certificate IV as anyone who completed the qualification through classroom-based study.

How It Works

Once your Student Agreement is signed and your initial payment is confirmed, your RPL journey begins — here's what to expect at each stage.

1
Collect Your Evidence
Using your personalised checklist, gather evidence that demonstrates your skills and experience. This may include employment records, certificates, photos, videos, or supervisor references. Your Navigator will guide you every step of the way.
2
Receive Your Enrolment & RPL Docs
We'll send your Enrolment Form and LLN Assessment to complete first. Following that, you'll receive your SelfAssessment Form and Third-Party Verification Form to work through carefully before moving to the next step.
3
Submit Your Completed Forms
Complete and sign all required forms, then return them along with your full evidence portfolio. Ensure every section is filled in, all signatures are included, and all supporting documents are attached before submitting.
4
Assessment and Competency Review
Your RTO Assessor will review and map your evidence against the required unit competencies. Where further clarification is needed, a competency conversation will be conducted to confirm your knowledge and skills.
5
Outcome Issued
Once assessed as competent across all required units, the RTO will formally issue your certificate or Statement of Attainment. Your real-world experience is now officially recognised as a nationally accredited qualification.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get a Certificate IV in Information Technology through RPL instead of studying at TAFE?
Yes, RPL lets your existing IT support experience be formally assessed against the national competency standards rather than requiring you to relearn skills you already use daily. The partner RTO carries out a genuine assessment to confirm your evidence meets the required level.
What evidence do I need for RPL in this IT qualification?
Useful evidence includes support tickets, job logs or service records showing ICT support tasks you've completed, along with records of software and hardware you've installed, configured or maintained. Network, systems or website documentation you've worked on can also support your application.
Is an RPL Certificate IV in Information Technology the same as one from full-time study?
Yes, it's the same AQF-registered qualification issued by an ASQA-registered RTO, whichever pathway you use to get it. RPL simply recognises the IT skills you already have through formal assessment, rather than issuing a different or lesser certificate.
What roles can this qualification help me move into?
A Certificate IV in Information Technology is aimed at roles such as Computer Technician, Client Support Officer (ICT) or Technical Officer (ICT). It gives people already doing this work a recognised qualification to formalise their IT support skills.
