SHB30221 Certificate III in Make-Up

Formal recognition for make-up artists who design and apply make-up across the beauty, fashion, media and entertainment industries.
Overview

Get recognised for the make-up artistry skills you already use on real jobs. The SHB30221 Certificate III in Make-Up is the nationally recognised qualification for people who design and apply make-up across beauty, fashion, media and entertainment work, from retail cosmetic counters and make-up studios to photography sets and productions. Through Recognition of Prior Learning, ATSR guides you through turning that on-the-job experience into formal evidence, which our partner RTO assesses against this qualification. The outcome is the same AQF-registered Certificate III held by anyone who completed the training through a classroom pathway.

How It Works

Once your Student Agreement is signed and your initial payment is confirmed, your RPL journey begins — here's what to expect at each stage.

1
Collect Your Evidence
Using your personalised checklist, gather evidence that demonstrates your skills and experience. This may include employment records, certificates, photos, videos, or supervisor references. Your Navigator will guide you every step of the way.
2
Receive Your Enrolment & RPL Docs
We'll send your Enrolment Form and LLN Assessment to complete first. Following that, you'll receive your SelfAssessment Form and Third-Party Verification Form to work through carefully before moving to the next step.
3
Submit Your Completed Forms
Complete and sign all required forms, then return them along with your full evidence portfolio. Ensure every section is filled in, all signatures are included, and all supporting documents are attached before submitting.
4
Assessment and Competency Review
Your RTO Assessor will review and map your evidence against the required unit competencies. Where further clarification is needed, a competency conversation will be conducted to confirm your knowledge and skills.
5
Outcome Issued
Once assessed as competent across all required units, the RTO will formally issue your certificate or Statement of Attainment. Your real-world experience is now officially recognised as a nationally accredited qualification.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get a Certificate III in Make-Up through RPL without enrolling in a full make-up course?
Yes, if you already work as a make-up artist you can have that hands-on experience formally assessed against the Certificate III in Make-Up instead of starting a course from scratch. ATSR guides you through gathering evidence of your skills, then a partner RTO carries out the formal assessment and decides if you meet the national standard.
What evidence do I need to show for RPL in make-up artistry?
You'll need real evidence from your actual make-up work, such as photos and videos of you applying make-up in a professional studio, salon, event or production setting. The assessor needs to see you clearly performing the tasks covered by the qualification, not just finished photos of the client.
Is an RPL Certificate III in Make-Up the same as one from TAFE?
Yes, it's the identical nationally recognised qualification, issued by an ASQA-registered RTO under the same AQF framework. RPL is simply a different pathway to that certificate, and ATSR's partner RTO issues it once you've met the same assessment requirements as a classroom student.
What jobs can I get with a Certificate III in Make-Up?
A Certificate III in Make-Up qualifies you to work as a make-up artist or move into more specialised creative make-up work, including special effects, wigs and prosthetics. Having the formal qualification on paper can open doors with agencies, production companies and beauty employers who require it for insurance or contract purposes.
