RII50520 Diploma of Civil Construction Design

Formal recognition for design paraprofessionals who develop site-specific civil designs and support professional engineers on infrastructure projects.
Overview

Get recognised for the civil design expertise you have built on the job. The RII50520 Diploma of Civil Construction Design formally recognises the skills of designers and design paraprofessionals who support professional engineers by developing site-specific designs for roads, drainage, pavements and other civil infrastructure. Through Recognition of Prior Learning, the technical judgement, planning and coordination skills you already use every day can be converted into this nationally recognised, AQF-registered qualification. ATSR guides you through that process and connects you with a partner RTO to assess your evidence and issue the qualification.

How It Works

Once your Student Agreement is signed and your initial payment is confirmed, your RPL journey begins — here's what to expect at each stage.

1
Collect Your Evidence
Using your personalised checklist, gather evidence that demonstrates your skills and experience. This may include employment records, certificates, photos, videos, or supervisor references. Your Navigator will guide you every step of the way.
2
Receive Your Enrolment & RPL Docs
We'll send your Enrolment Form and LLN Assessment to complete first. Following that, you'll receive your SelfAssessment Form and Third-Party Verification Form to work through carefully before moving to the next step.
3
Submit Your Completed Forms
Complete and sign all required forms, then return them along with your full evidence portfolio. Ensure every section is filled in, all signatures are included, and all supporting documents are attached before submitting.
4
Assessment and Competency Review
Your RTO Assessor will review and map your evidence against the required unit competencies. Where further clarification is needed, a competency conversation will be conducted to confirm your knowledge and skills.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get a Diploma of Civil Construction Design through RPL without going back to full-time study?
Yes, if you've been doing civil design or drafting work, that experience can be formally assessed against the Diploma instead of you enrolling in a full course. ATSR helps you put your evidence together, and our partner RTO carries out the formal assessment.
What evidence do you need for RPL in civil construction design?
You need real design work as evidence, such as site-specific design drawings or CAD files you've produced for civil works like roads, drainage or car parks, and design calculations or reports you've prepared for pavements or earthworks. The assessor checks this evidence covers the range of design tasks required across the qualification.
Is an RPL Diploma of Civil Construction Design the same qualification as one from a training provider?
Yes, it's the same AQF-registered Diploma of Civil Construction Design, issued by an ASQA-registered RTO no matter which pathway you use to get it. RPL is a genuine assessment route to the identical qualification, not a lesser or different one.
Can RPL help a drafter move into a civil design paraprofessional role?
A Diploma of Civil Construction Design through RPL gives you the same qualification behind roles like civil construction designer, civil engineering draftsperson and design paraprofessional. It formally recognises the site-specific design work you've already been producing to support professional engineers.
