How It Works

The Navigator's Path to Automotive Recognition

A step-by-step pathway to formal recognition in the automotive trade.

Collect Your Evidence

Using your personalised checklist, gather evidence that demonstrates your skills and experience. This may include employment records, certificates, photos, videos, or supervisor references. Your Navigator will guide you every step of the way.
01

Receive Your Enrolment & RPL Docs

We’ll send your Enrolment Form and LLN Assessment to complete first. Following that, you’ll receive your Self-Assessment Form and Third-Party Verification Form to work through carefully before moving to the next step.
02

Submit Your Completed Forms

Complete and sign all required forms, then return them along with your full evidence portfolio. Ensure every section is filled in, all signatures are included, and all supporting documents are attached before submitting.
03

Assessment and Competency Review

Your RTO Assessor will review and map your evidence against the required unit competencies. Where further clarification is needed, a competency conversation will be conducted to confirm your knowledge and skills.
04

Outcome Issued

Once assessed as competent across all required units, the RTO will formally issue your certificate or Statement of Attainment. Your real-world experience is now officially recognised as a nationally accredited qualification.

FAQ

The Answers You Need Before You Start Your Automotive Trade Recognition
I've been fixing cars for years without completing a formal apprenticeship. Can RPL still get me qualified?

Yes. RPL assesses your real workshop experience against the required competencies regardless of whether you completed an apprenticeship — this typically applies to AUR30620 Certificate III in Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology.

What kind of evidence do assessors actually want to see from a mechanic?+

Completed job cards, diagnostic printouts, and photos or short videos of you performing repairs are the strongest evidence — paired with a written reference from a licensed mechanic or workshop owner confirming your work.

Does finishing my qualification through RPL give me a licence to run my own workshop on its own?+

No — RPL gives you the nationally recognised trade qualification itself, not a business licence. Business registration and any state-based repairer licensing are separate processes you'd apply for once your qualification is issued.

I mainly do auto electrical work, not general mechanical repairs. Does that change which qualification I'm assessed against?+

Yes. Auto electrical fault-finding and rewiring experience is assessed against AUR40626 Certificate IV in Automotive Electrical Technology, a distinct qualification from the general light vehicle mechanical pathway.
