FNS40222 Certificate IV in Accounting and Bookkeeping

Formal recognition for individuals in the accounting and bookkeeping industry, including BAS agents and contract bookkeepers, who prepare and lodge activity statements, reconciliations and financial reports.
Overview

Turn years of hands-on bookkeeping and accounts experience into the FNS40222 Certificate IV in Accounting and Bookkeeping, a nationally recognised qualification for individuals in the accounting and bookkeeping industry, including business activity statement (BAS) agents and contract bookkeepers. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) allows your experience preparing and lodging activity statements, processing data, completing monthly reconciliations and preparing financial reports to be formally assessed against this qualification rather than starting your learning over. Once your evidence is assessed and confirmed by our partner RTO, you hold the same AQF-recognised Certificate IV as anyone who completed the qualification through classroom-based study. This qualification is currently cited as meeting the Tax Practitioners Board (TPB) education requirements for registration as a BAS agent.

How It Works

Once your Student Agreement is signed and your initial payment is confirmed, your RPL journey begins — here's what to expect at each stage.

1
Collect Your Evidence
Using your personalised checklist, gather evidence that demonstrates your skills and experience. This may include employment records, certificates, photos, videos, or supervisor references. Your Navigator will guide you every step of the way.
2
Receive Your Enrolment & RPL Docs
We'll send your Enrolment Form and LLN Assessment to complete first. Following that, you'll receive your SelfAssessment Form and Third-Party Verification Form to work through carefully before moving to the next step.
3
Submit Your Completed Forms
Complete and sign all required forms, then return them along with your full evidence portfolio. Ensure every section is filled in, all signatures are included, and all supporting documents are attached before submitting.
4
Assessment and Competency Review
Your RTO Assessor will review and map your evidence against the required unit competencies. Where further clarification is needed, a competency conversation will be conducted to confirm your knowledge and skills.
5
Outcome Issued
Once assessed as competent across all required units, the RTO will formally issue your certificate or Statement of Attainment. Your real-world experience is now officially recognised as a nationally accredited qualification.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get my Certificate IV in Accounting and Bookkeeping through RPL if I've been doing the job for years?
Yes, if you've been working in accounts or bookkeeping, RPL lets an RTO formally assess your existing skills against the qualification instead of putting you through the course as if starting from scratch. You'll still go through a real assessment process to prove your skills meet the national standard.
What evidence do I need to show for RPL bookkeeping recognition?
You'll need documents that show you've actually done the work, such as financial reports, reconciliations or budgets you've prepared, BAS or instalment activity statements you've lodged, and payroll or accounts payable/receivable records you've managed. The assessor uses this evidence to check your skills against each unit in the qualification, so keep records that clearly show what you did and when.
Is an RPL Certificate IV in Accounting and Bookkeeping recognised the same as one from TAFE?
Yes, it's the same AQF-registered Certificate IV, issued by an ASQA-registered RTO no matter which pathway you use to get it. Employers and further study providers can't tell the difference on the certificate — RPL and full-time study lead to the identical qualification.
What can I do with this qualification once I've got it?
This qualification supports roles like Accounts Supervisor, Accounts Officer and Bookkeeper, covering everything from accounts payable and receivable through to BAS preparation and supervising computer-based accounting systems. It also gives you a recognised base to build on if you later want to work toward a Diploma of Accounting.
