SHB20121 Certificate II in Retail Cosmetics

Formal recognition for retail sales personnel who sell and demonstrate beauty or cosmetic products under direct supervision.
Overview

Get recognised for the retail and cosmetics skills you already use on the job. The SHB20121 Certificate II in Retail Cosmetics is the nationally recognised qualification for retail sales personnel who sell and demonstrate beauty and cosmetic products, from skincare consultations to make-up application and salon transactions. Through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), ATSR guides you in turning that real-world retail and beauty experience into a formal evidence portfolio, which our partner RTO assesses against the same national standards as any other pathway. The result is the same AQF-registered qualification, recognising the skills you have built on the shop floor.

How It Works

Once your Student Agreement is signed and your initial payment is confirmed, your RPL journey begins — here's what to expect at each stage.

1
Collect Your Evidence
Using your personalised checklist, gather evidence that demonstrates your skills and experience. This may include employment records, certificates, photos, videos, or supervisor references. Your Navigator will guide you every step of the way.
2
Receive Your Enrolment & RPL Docs
We'll send your Enrolment Form and LLN Assessment to complete first. Following that, you'll receive your SelfAssessment Form and Third-Party Verification Form to work through carefully before moving to the next step.
3
Submit Your Completed Forms
Complete and sign all required forms, then return them along with your full evidence portfolio. Ensure every section is filled in, all signatures are included, and all supporting documents are attached before submitting.
4
Assessment and Competency Review
Your RTO Assessor will review and map your evidence against the required unit competencies. Where further clarification is needed, a competency conversation will be conducted to confirm your knowledge and skills.
5
Outcome Issued
Once assessed as competent across all required units, the RTO will formally issue your certificate or Statement of Attainment. Your real-world experience is now officially recognised as a nationally accredited qualification.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get a Certificate II in Retail Cosmetics through RPL without doing a full course?
Yes, if you've been working in retail cosmetics or beauty sales, that experience can be formally assessed against the Certificate II instead of you enrolling in a complete course. ATSR helps you prepare your evidence, and our partner RTO carries out the formal assessment.
What evidence do you need for RPL in retail cosmetics?
You need evidence from a real, active workplace, such as photos of you clearly working in a professional retail setting and short videos showing you performing relevant tasks on site. The assessor uses this to confirm your skills match what's required across the certificate.
Is an RPL Certificate II in Retail Cosmetics the same as one from a training provider?
Yes, it's the same nationally recognised Certificate II in Retail Cosmetics, issued by an ASQA-registered RTO whichever pathway you use to get it. RPL recognises the skills you already have through a formal assessment process — it isn't a lesser or different certificate.
Can a Certificate II in Retail Cosmetics help you get a job at a beauty counter or cosmetics retailer?
A Certificate II in Retail Cosmetics is the entry-level qualification behind roles such as retail cosmetics assistant and retail sales consultant, where you demonstrate skincare and cosmetic products and advise customers. Getting it through RPL formally recognises retail beauty experience you've already gained on the floor.
