SHB40216 Certificate IV in Hairdressing

Formal recognition for senior hairdressers who provide specialist colouring, cutting and chemical reformation services and technical leadership.
Overview

The SHB40216 Certificate IV in Hairdressing recognises the skills of senior hairdressers who provide specialist services such as complex colour correction, chemical reformation and creative hair design, often while leading and supporting a salon team. If you already work at this level, RPL lets you convert that real, on-the-job experience into a nationally recognised qualification without repeating skills you have already mastered. Through a structured evidence and assessment process, your technical expertise is measured against the same national standard as any other pathway into this qualification.

How It Works

Once your Student Agreement is signed and your initial payment is confirmed, your RPL journey begins — here's what to expect at each stage.

1
Collect Your Evidence
Using your personalised checklist, gather evidence that demonstrates your skills and experience. This may include employment records, certificates, photos, videos, or supervisor references. Your Navigator will guide you every step of the way.
2
Receive Your Enrolment & RPL Docs
We'll send your Enrolment Form and LLN Assessment to complete first. Following that, you'll receive your SelfAssessment Form and Third-Party Verification Form to work through carefully before moving to the next step.
3
Submit Your Completed Forms
Complete and sign all required forms, then return them along with your full evidence portfolio. Ensure every section is filled in, all signatures are included, and all supporting documents are attached before submitting.
4
Assessment and Competency Review
Your RTO Assessor will review and map your evidence against the required unit competencies. Where further clarification is needed, a competency conversation will be conducted to confirm your knowledge and skills.
5
Outcome Issued
Once assessed as competent across all required units, the RTO will formally issue your certificate or Statement of Attainment. Your real-world experience is now officially recognised as a nationally accredited qualification.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can experienced hairdressers get a Certificate IV in Hairdressing through RPL?
Yes, advanced technical skills built up on the job, such as colour correction and chemical reformation, can be formally assessed against the Certificate IV in Hairdressing. ATSR helps you put together the evidence of that work, which a partner RTO then formally assesses against the national units.
What evidence is needed for Certificate IV Hairdressing RPL?
You need real, on-site evidence of your technical hairdressing work, such as photos and videos of you performing advanced services in a professional salon setting. The assessor needs to see the specific technical tasks the qualification covers actually being carried out by you.
Is a Certificate IV in Hairdressing gained through RPL the same as one earned at TAFE?
Yes, it's the identical AQF-registered qualification issued by an ASQA-registered RTO, whichever pathway you take. RPL doesn't create a different or lesser certificate, the outcome on paper is exactly the same.
What roles can a Certificate IV in Hairdressing lead to?
A Certificate IV in Hairdressing can support a move into senior hairdressing, session styling for fashion and advertising work, or a technical advisor role with a product or brand. It's generally the level employers look for when hiring a hairdresser to lead a salon team or take on more advanced technical work.
