SIT40521 Certificate IV in Kitchen Management

Formal recognition for chefs and cooks who take on a supervisory or team leading role in the kitchen, operating independently and solving non-routine problems.
Overview

Turn years of hands-on kitchen leadership into the SIT40521 Certificate IV in Kitchen Management, a nationally recognised qualification for chefs and cooks who take on a supervisory or team leading role in the kitchen. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) allows your experience managing kitchen operations in restaurants, hotels, clubs, pubs and cafes to be formally assessed against this qualification rather than starting your learning over. Once your evidence is assessed and confirmed by our partner RTO, you hold the same AQF-recognised Certificate IV as anyone who completed the qualification through classroom-based study.

Chef
Plans and organises the preparation and cooking of food, including menu planning, ordering supplies and advising staff on cooking procedures.
Chef de Partie

How It Works

Once your Student Agreement is signed and your initial payment is confirmed, your RPL journey begins — here's what to expect at each stage.

1
Collect Your Evidence
Using your personalised checklist, gather evidence that demonstrates your skills and experience. This may include employment records, certificates, photos, videos, or supervisor references. Your Navigator will guide you every step of the way.
2
Receive Your Enrolment & RPL Docs
We'll send your Enrolment Form and LLN Assessment to complete first. Following that, you'll receive your SelfAssessment Form and Third-Party Verification Form to work through carefully before moving to the next step.
3
Submit Your Completed Forms
Complete and sign all required forms, then return them along with your full evidence portfolio. Ensure every section is filled in, all signatures are included, and all supporting documents are attached before submitting.
4
Assessment and Competency Review
Your RTO Assessor will review and map your evidence against the required unit competencies. Where further clarification is needed, a competency conversation will be conducted to confirm your knowledge and skills.
5
Outcome Issued
Once assessed as competent across all required units, the RTO will formally issue your certificate or Statement of Attainment. Your real-world experience is now officially recognised as a nationally accredited qualification.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get a Certificate IV in Kitchen Management through RPL if I've already been running a kitchen?
Yes, RPL lets a partner RTO assess the kitchen management skills and experience you already have against the SIT40521 units rather than you doing the full course from the beginning. ATSR helps you gather your evidence, and the RTO conducts the assessment and issues the qualification.
What kind of evidence do I need to show kitchen management experience?
You need real evidence of you actually managing a kitchen, such as menus or recipes you've designed or costed, cooking operation plans or production schedules you've prepared, and rosters you've written for kitchen staff. Records of budgets or financial reports you've handled also help support the application.
Is a Certificate IV in Kitchen Management from RPL the same as one from full-time study?
Yes, it's the same AQF-registered qualification issued by an ASQA-registered RTO, whichever pathway is used to earn it. RPL doesn't change the qualification itself, only how it's assessed and awarded.
Does a Certificate IV in Kitchen Management qualify me to be a head chef?
This qualification supports roles such as chef and chef de partie, covering menu planning, ordering supplies and advising staff on cooking procedures at a supervisory level. It's suited to people already leading or managing kitchen operations, or moving into that level of responsibility.
