SHB30416 Certificate III in Hairdressing

Formal recognition for hairdressers who provide cutting, colouring and styling services to clients in a salon environment.
Overview

Certificate III in Hairdressing (SHB30416) gives formal, nationally recognised status to the cutting, colouring and styling skills you have built behind the chair. This qualification covers the full breadth of salon hairdressing work, from client consultations and shampoo services through to colour correction, chemical treatments and finished hair design. If you have been working professionally in a salon, Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) lets you convert that real-world experience into evidence for a formal assessment against this qualification. ATSR guides you through building that evidence portfolio, and your partner RTO conducts the assessment and issues the certificate.

How It Works

Once your Student Agreement is signed and your initial payment is confirmed, your RPL journey begins — here's what to expect at each stage.

1
Collect Your Evidence
Using your personalised checklist, gather evidence that demonstrates your skills and experience. This may include employment records, certificates, photos, videos, or supervisor references. Your Navigator will guide you every step of the way.
2
Receive Your Enrolment & RPL Docs
We'll send your Enrolment Form and LLN Assessment to complete first. Following that, you'll receive your SelfAssessment Form and Third-Party Verification Form to work through carefully before moving to the next step.
3
Submit Your Completed Forms
Complete and sign all required forms, then return them along with your full evidence portfolio. Ensure every section is filled in, all signatures are included, and all supporting documents are attached before submitting.
4
Assessment and Competency Review
Your RTO Assessor will review and map your evidence against the required unit competencies. Where further clarification is needed, a competency conversation will be conducted to confirm your knowledge and skills.
5
Outcome Issued
Once assessed as competent across all required units, the RTO will formally issue your certificate or Statement of Attainment. Your real-world experience is now officially recognised as a nationally accredited qualification.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get my Certificate III in Hairdressing through RPL instead of doing an apprenticeship?
Yes, if you've already been cutting, colouring and styling hair in a real salon, that experience can be formally assessed against the Certificate III in Hairdressing. ATSR guides you through building your evidence portfolio, then a partner RTO conducts the formal assessment against the national units of competency.
How much salon experience do I need for RPL hairdressing?
You need enough real, on-the-job evidence to demonstrate the full range of skills in the qualification, typically shown through photos of your salon workplace and videos of you cutting, colouring and styling clients. The assessor needs to see you actually performing these tasks in a professional setting, not just the finished results.
Is an RPL hairdressing certificate the same qualification as one from TAFE?
Yes, it's the exact same Certificate III in Hairdressing, issued under the same AQF national framework by an ASQA-registered RTO. RPL is a different route to get there, not a different or lesser certificate.
What can I do with a Certificate III in Hairdressing that I can't do without it?
A Certificate III in Hairdressing is the formal qualification most salons and employers look for when hiring a qualified hairdresser, including specialising in men's hairdressing and grooming. It can also open the door to further study, such as a Certificate IV in Hairdressing, for hairdressers wanting to move into senior or technical roles.
